  1. Yamato Kurosawa (birth name, Hideo Itokawa) was born in the Ikebukuro neighborhood of Tokyo, Japan, on November 12th, 1989. The son of Hitoshi Itokawa and Emily Clark-Itokawa, Yamato's father, worked as a line machinist at a local battery factory. At the same time, his mother, an ex-pat American, taught young children to speak English. Yamato showed academic excellence from a very young age and achieved top marks in his class. When he was not tending to his studies, he enjoyed playing poker and gambling with his friends. Young gangsters in the area noticed his knack for gambling and would often invite him to hang around their businesses, playing various games. During his high school years, Yamato's mother became gravely ill and was unable to work as a result. His father was put into dire financial straits between bringing in the sole family income and paying his wife's medical bills. Yamato, motivated especially by his sick mother, decided to take up odds and ends jobs for the gangsters he had associated with in order to help provide for his family. Shortly after he graduated high school, his mother succumbed to her illness. Yamato had plans to pursue medical school and become a nephrologist but found himself completely unmotivated in his academic pursuits from the depression of losing his mother. Over time, Yamato became increasingly integrated into the criminal underworld of Tokyo, taking part and doing things he had never imagined doing. His ambition and achievement were noticed by Katsumi Takei, a kyodai in the yakuza Inagawa-kai. Takei offered to take Yamato under his wing as his shatei. Hoping to find meaning and comfort through fraternity, Yamato accepted his proposal and dove further into a life of crime. Sometime after, Yamato's father became aware of his son's criminal lifestyle and disowned him for dishonoring his family. Yamato spent many years rising through the ranks of Inagawa-kai and began to spearhead many operations as he rose through the ranks, particularly gambling and extortion. One day, Yamato was ordered to carry out the task of murdering a man. The man was his father. His father became financially crippled after his wife's death and his son's exile, as his wife's medical bills were too monumental to pay. His father turned to the Yamaguchi-gumi, a yakuza clan allied with the Inagawa-kai, for a loan to help pay off the debt; however, he was unaware of how tremendous the interest of this loan was and soon found himself in a deeper hole financially than when he started out. Yamaguchi-gumi sent some men to intimidate Yamato's father into paying his loan, and eventually, a fight broke out. Yamato's father was able to fend off the men, mortally wounding one of them. Yamaguchi-gumi then reached out to the Inagawa-kai, asking them to dispatch Yamato's father for mortally wounding one of their own; Yamaguchi-gumi was under heavy watch by the police force at the time and could not risk having a murder investigation on their hands. Upon the realization that the man in question was his father, Yamoto pleaded to his oyabun to spare his father, but the only mercy to be found was that the order was given to another kyodai. Yamato quickly warned his father of his impending doom, pleading with him to go into hiding and offering him money to do so. Still disgusted by his son's actions, Yamato's father demanded that he leave at once and refused to heed his warning. Shortly after their last encounter, Yamato's father disappeared, never to be seen again. Filled with rage, Yamato plotted to assassinate his oyabun by poisoning his tea. After successfully assassinating his oyabun, Yamato staged his own death and fled to the United States, changing his name from Hideo Itokawa to Yamato Kurosawa, fearing that his plot would be uncovered. Yamato finds himself in a new and strange city, hoping to find new meaning and opportunities, likely in establishing a new criminal enterprise.
